‘Timetunnel’ : Leeuwarden : 2012

A landmark in the city of Leeuwarden. The sculpture is situated at a T-junction ending an important entry road into the city. Driving into a city is driving back in time. First you’ll see the vast shapeless boxes on industrial estates, then the suburbs form the last century, peeling back right to the medieval centre of town. This sculpture deals with that phenomenon. You arrive in Leeuwarden, what do you see: Leeuwarden. Divided into three time-zones, a stretched 3D map of the city is can be seen from an arriving car. From all other angles the sculpture remains an abstraction, not dictated by the ‘lust for form’ of the artist, but by the serendipitous growing patters of a typical West European city.
