The pieces in the 'Embossment Collection' were made by vacuum shaping. Framed thermoplastic sheets were placed into a heater that I'd built out of four electric table-top ovens. The sheets were heated until tender and then slammed onto a mold placed on a perforated tabletop that was connected to an industrial twin-engine vacuum cleaner. I think of the embossments as three dimensional works made with photographic considerations in mind. The collection is roughly divided into three thematic sections: ’Food’, ‘Healing’ and ‘Limbs’. They vary in size from 10 x 10 cm up to 40 x 80 cm. Some of the embossments were exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam and were purchased for the city collection.
