‘Heavenly Dice’ : Haarlemmermeer : 2004

An art project was initiated in the Haarlemmermeer polder to commemorate the airdrop of food parcels over a starving Holland at the end of the Second World War. My proposal was to airdrop two very large scale dice made of foam. They would be a symbol of the role of chance in war, of a fate forced upon us, or of the good fortune of escaping harm. The outcome of the rolling of the giant dice would determine something in the ‘here and now’ for the people in the Haarlemmermeer polder; perhaps the numbers in a local lottery or a decision in the order of play between football clubs.
