‘Urban Chambers’ : Zutphen : 2009
A collaboration with landscape architect Rob van Dijk. We developed a design strategy for a new stretch of the ring-road for the city of Zutphen: the N348. The backbone of this plan was the use of ‘landscaped-rooms’. These giant rooms would mediate between the interior spaces of the city and the wide-open landscape that surrounds it. The rooms were not intended to ‘fence off’, but instead to create spaces in which things could come together. Besides the rooms, the N348 passes a few significant ‘thresholds’ that we chose to emphasise. The road passes over a bridge, through a tunnel, across an industrial estate, passes a graveyard and runs through the city before ending with fine views over the river IJssel.
